TWIRC: This Week In RC, April 27-May 3

Welcome back my friends! This week saw the mercury plunge back into the “freeze warning” portion of the gaige and with that came another week of working on things behind the scenes on a litany of projects that resulted in getting a handful of these vehicles a few steps closer to being ran in front of the camera. Also hitting our inboxes this week were new releases from JConcepts, Pro-Line and Team Associated; my wallet already hates me this month and these hot new releases aren’t helping things at all! Let’s dive in and seed what’s new!

JCONCEPTS

Coming from seemingly out of nowhere is the new 2010 Ford Raptor SVT body fitting the Redcat Vertex 6 1./6 Trail Trick; a chassis that as of the time of this writing hasn’t had much aftermarket support. This behemoth of a body comes in at 21.5″ long with a 14.5″ wheelbase and an 8″ width, meaning it will not fit our Big Red Bastard (the Redcat Shredder that we reviewed a few years back) as that truck, despite also being 1/6, is more than 4″ longer in the wheelbase department. The familiar lines of the Raptor and suits the Vertex 6’s size to a “T”. As with all JConcepts body shells this plus-sized Ford includes overspray film, premium window masks and a detailed decal sheet to bring the shell to life.

PRO-LINE

Pro-Line has announced several new products this month for the crawling and scaling community, including the new Rock Tek front weight system, new Mickey Thompson Pro XS tires and new, shorter Pro-Spec threaded body aluminum dampers. Let’s dive in and see what all these parts are all about.

The Rock Tek weight system solves a longtime issue in RC crawling: how to keep the weight at the lowest point while the tire is rotating. In the beginning drivers used steel BB”s that did place the weight at the point of the contact with the surface but as the truck begins to climb that point and the point being most affected by gravity move further and further apart. The contact patch stays much the same as on flat ground; a point somewhere roughly 90 degrees to the wheel nut, yet since the BB’s have mas and are affected by gravity they are pulled toward level and subsequently away from the contact patch. When this happens the center of gravity moves higher and higher until, at a certain point, the truck will flip over backwards.

Pro-Line’s Rock Tek system eliminates the movement of the weight by placing it radially on one side of a large ball bearing that replaces the inner clamp ring of a beadlock wheel, while also placing a magnet 180 degrees from the weight that mates up with a magnet mounted to the knuckle that keeps the weight from rotating due to centrifugal force. Additional weight can be added to the system and the kit is currently available for the Axial SC10iii or the Traxxas TRX-4.

Up next are the Mickey Thompson Pro XS tire that has a more closely packed tread than the Pro X, giving as much contact with the rocks as possible, while the shorter lug height for added stability. Inside these tires are soft, open-cell foam inserts and each tire measures 4.65″ tall and 1.6″ tall. Finally, these new Mickey’s are available in the soft, warm weather G8 and the ultra-sticky, cool weather Predator compound.

Rounding out this month’s releases are the 80-85mm Pro-Spec dampers for scalers and crawlers. Like other Pro-Line Pro-Spec dampers these CNC machined aluminum units feature X-ring seals, chrome plated steel shafts, threaded bodies and have dual springs to balance performance over both small and big obstacles. The 80-85mm length eliminates the need to limit shocks internally and are perfect for short travel rigs and smaller Mini-Sportsman competitors alike.

TEAM ASSOCIATED

Rounding out the new releases this week are two new kits from Team Associated: the Rival MT10 Factory Team and the Rival MT10 Classic Kit. Containing more gold anodizing than Goldmember can shake a shtick at these new trucks are significantly better equipped than the previously released RTR’s while having a totally unique look. The differences between these two models are subtle and are represented by the Classic Kit’s white plastics and white dyable Method Race Wheels. Staple features include gold-anodized threaded body aluminum dampers, clear bodies, three sealed gear differentials, front and rear CVA’s, gold anodized aluminum parts throughout, high-grip off-road tires, a steel center driveshaft as well as beefy 4mm steel turnbuckles. Both trucks look great and thankfully leave the paint scheme to your but the kits do include livery decals to make finishing a snap. Since these are kits electronics are not include and sold separately.
