While stronger than traditional 12mm hexes, the 14mm units that come
stock on the Arrma Senton 4×4 MEGA (and the Granite 4×4 MEGA as well)
limit your wheel choices. The solution isn’t as simple as swapping out
the 14mm hexes for 12mm’s off of another vehicle that you may have
laying around (I tried hexes from HPI, Tamiya, Traxxas, Associated and
Axial) due to the Senton’s M6 axles and large 2.5mm drive pin. I have
found a fairly simple work-around for this though and it only requires a
few parts that most have in their pit box already.
I ordered the Tekno M6 12mm adapters for the Slash 4×4 and hoped that
they would use the larger drive pin. They do not. They use the stock 2mm
pin that the Slash (and most other 1/10 vehicles) uses. This meant that
the hex would not engage the drive pin and would need modified. I
didn’t want to compromise the integrity of the adapter as it is already
fairly thin around the drive pin and removing any more material could
ruin the hexes. What I ended up doing is using a spare set of 2mm drive
pins that I had on hand and slid the Tekno adapters over them. This
locked them into place and took out any of the slop around the pin. The
stock 2.5mm pins are also longer than the ones that work with the 12mm
hexes and would nearly stick out of both sides if you were to trim the
adapters.
I am using JConcepts Rulux wheels for the Slash 4×4 and the offset is the same as the stock wheels and keep the tires inside the fenders. As soon as the near foot of snow that we got last night melts I’ll take the truck out for a proper test but on the bench the wheels run true with no slop resulting from the smaller pins. This is the simplest way I have found so far to adapt the Senton 4×4 MEGA to 12mm. I would venture a guess that Arrma will offer their own 12mm hex adapters for the truck that will accept the stock pins and once a product like that is released I will pick them up and try them.
