Solid axle monster truck racers now have two new tire options for their 1/10 (2.6″ wheel) MT with the release of JConcepts new Knobs and Launch tires. Each of the new tires are patterned after hand cut full scale monster truck tires that were being experimented with by drivers such as Alan Pezo on his Predator and Prowler trucks in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
First up are the Knobs, a tire named for its irregular diamond shaped tread blocks, that feature a low-profile carcass for a racier look and feel. React open cell inserts support the lightweight sidewalls and aid in reducing overall rotating mass. The Knobs are available in two compounds, a soft “blue” and a medium “gold”. Drivers running on dirt, grass or asphalt will reach for the Blue compound while carpet and turf racers will find the Gold compound a better choice. While the Knobs can be ran front or rear testing has proven that pairing them with the Launch tires on the rear is the optimum setup (and is very similar to the tire setup that Predator Racing used on their trucks in the full-scale MT racing world).
For drivers looking for the ultimate in forward bite look no further than the Launch. Patterned after full-scale hand-cut tires the Launch features “closely spaced tread elements [that] were excavated away leaving an alternating upper lip” according to a press release issued by JConcepts. Within that lip are micro cuts and channels that are remnants of the cutting process which in this scale will add another level of grip. Also available in Blue and Gold compounds and supported by React open-cell inserts the Launch can be used on multiple surfaces but excels on dirt and asphalt.
