Redcat is bringing the solid axle monster truck fun to a smaller scale with the introduction of their new MT-18 1/18 RTR mini-monster. This truck combines the looks of a traditional ladder frame chassis and solid front and rear axles with the performance of a 4-link suspension design, bearing supported drivetrain and a powerful 180 size motor.
The low center of gravity chassis is a scale appearing 2mm thick stamped aluminum piece that incorporates numerous shock mounting positions both front and rear. Extending from the center of said chassis are the 4-link bars that locate the axles and offer ample suspension travel when combined with the oil-filled, aluminum capped dampers. Bump steer is eliminated thanks to the axles servo-on-axle arrangement and the truck is four wheel steering capable with the addition of an optional second servo (servo sold separately). Inside the axles are metal axle gears and driveshafts; each supported by ball bearings for smooth, long-lasting performance. Metal slider style center driveshafts transfer power from the center mounted transmission meaning all of the motor’s torque finds its way to the axles without risk of twisting or breakage.
What would a monster truck be without some massive wheels and tires? The MT-18 makes use of scale-appearing grey glue-on wheels with molding-in beadlock detail wrapped in chunky chevron-style tires that mimic the uncut ag tires used in the early days of full-scale monster trucking. Redcat offers two paint schemes for the MT-18; a red and white Edelbrock motif and a blue Lawless livery, each laid over a classic pickup shell. The body is hinged at the front for easy battery changes and is held down in the rear with a hidden twist-lock system that keeps the body securely in place without the use of non-scale body pins.
For electronics, Redcat has included a 2.4gHz three channel radio system paired with a 2-in-1 RX/ESC combo for reliable performance while maintaining a small footprint within the chassis. A 58 turn 180-size brushed motor provides the oomph while a Hexfly HX-M4k 4kg coreless metal gear micro servo keeps the tires pointing in the right direction. Rounding out the electronics package are a 750mAh 2s LiPO battery and USB charger.
