Traxxas isn’t just dipping their toes into the 1/8 buggy market, they’re diving from the roof above the high dive to make a splash with the release of their new Jato 4×4 buggy. Available as an entry level 2s powered BL-2s model or the full-tilt-boogie VXL-4s these buggies are packed with features that have become synonymous with big buggy racing.
Being known as “The RTR Brand” in RC it is no surprise that the BL2s version is aimed directly at newer hobbyists with its waterproof electronics, maintenance-free brushless power system and Extreme Duty suspension components. Underneath the new cab-forward clipless body is a familiar sight: the LCG Slash 4×4 chassis. The Slash 4×4 (and other Short Course trucks) are similarly sized to 1/8 buggies meaning using the previously designed chassis reduces costs, creates a vast network of replacement and upgrade parts and makes working on the car easy thanks to its modular design. Reinforcing the chassis is Traxxas’ patented T-Bar chassis brace that eliminates fore/aft as well as torsional flex, extending the life of the drivetrain and chassis components. Showing Traxxas’ attention to the small details is an aerodynamic front bulkhead cover that smooths the transition from the bulkhead to the chassis as well as captures the hinge pins for added security.Extreme HD suspension arms. new shock towers, a robust wing mount and well as 13mm diameter GTR shocks make for top-shelf handling without the top-shelf price tag.
Transferring power from the motor to the wheels are a slew of heavy-duty drivetrain components from some of Traxxas’ toughest vehicles. The Revo lends its slipper design and sealed steel-gear differentials while the MAXX donates its driveshafts to the cause. A HOSS/Stampede 4×4 32p spur gear meshes perfectly with the pinion thanks to Traxxas’ unique fixed gear mesh system first seen on the 2wd line of vehicles. MAXX duty 17mm wheel hexes hold the new 3.0″ buggy wheels firmly in place while new Sledgehammer tires give the car an aggressive look to match its performance.
For electronics the Jato 4×4 BL-2s utilizes the new BL-2s brushless motor and speed control with Traxxas iD high-current connector, a 2075 digital waterproof servo, TQ 2.4 gHz 2-channel transmitter and a corresponding 3-channel receiver.
For the VXL-4s Jato 4×4 Traxxas threw the parts box at the car and it shows. In addition to all of the features listed above the 4s version gets the new 540XL 4s motor and speed control, a Torque Biasing Center Drive, an aluminum T-Bar chassis brace instead of the standard plastic. aluminum GTR dampers, a 32p steel spur gear, a TQi radio system with TSM (Traxxas Stability Management) and a 5-channel receiver, dish 3.0″ wheels and soft, S1 compound Response tires. While the BL-2s Jato 4×4 is available at the time of publication the VXL-4s is available for pre-order and will ship in early 2025.
