TWIRC: This Week In RC, April 14-19

Welcome back everyone! This past week has seen all four seasons here in southern West Virginia, from hot and humid summer days to frost and freeze warnings in the pre-dawn hours; we’ve had it all! It’s been said here for decades that “If you don’t like the weather in West Virginia, give it five minutes” and that has certainly been the case! I’ve not been able to pin down enough time to charge a battery (or two, depending on which truck I’m planning to run), pack up my gear, get to a remote spote to have some privacy and actually run without the weather changing in quite some time. Afternoon showers, cold mornings, muggy evenings, it has been a mess! With any luck the weather will dry up soon and we can return to our regularly scheduled review content. In the meantime let’s take a look at the new parts and kits the RC industry is teasing us with this week!

JCONCEPTS

New this week from JConcepts are a pair of bodies for the current generation of racers from Team Associated, the RC10B7 and RC10B84, this time carrying the moniker Dragonator. This body can be used for turf, carpet or dirt racing and is hailed as an “all cab” design. The cab starts with a steeper raked windshield that decreases in radius as it travels rearward to the base of the wing, only being interrupted bythe molded spur gear hump that fits most popular transmission setups. A stabilizing upper fin is molded in for added stability and increased lateral grip and the included wing is designed to work on multiple surfaces. This body has a polarizing look and if it suits your taste you’ll receive the usual premium quality polycarbonate we’ve all come to expect from JConcepts as well as their semi-transparent window masks and a full-color decal sheet and overspray film.

TEAM ASSOCIATED

While Team Associated has been on a retro kick as of late they haven’t forgotten about their core audience, the racers, and have a new kit that should help propel a new class into popularity: 1/10 4wd Truck. The new RC10T84 Team Kit is based on the buggy of the same generation but receives several key changes to suit the geometric needs of a truck (and its larger rolling stock), of which includes new truck specific gullwing suspension arms, 25mm and 31mm length 13mm diameter shock bodies, titanium nitride coated shock shafts, front and rear molded shock tower covers to protect the carbon towers, new wide tongue aluminum chassis plate, truck specific wider “A” and “B” blocks, wider front CVA’s for truck wheels, wider axles shafts for truck specific use and new molded front bumper options that can protect the anti-roll bar assembly from damage (a narrower option is also included in the box). Parts compatibility with the buggy is abundant making keeping both running at the track is a simple, single parts stash affair. Topping off the package is a new, half-buggy-half-truck body that features a narrow cab section (akin to the boggy) that is exaggerated by the oversized nylon wing and its adjustable mount. Electronics, wheels, tires, battery and finishing supplies are not included.

ARRMA

For fans of the big 6s line of bashers from Arrma seeing additions to the “EXB” (EXtreme Bash) lineup is always a welcome sight and this week saw the Talion truggy included in that conversation. This truck not only grows a bit (now 1/7 scale instead of 1/8) thanks to a longer chassis with longer center chassis braces but that chassis is also a slab of laser etched 7075 T6 aluminum. Aluminum bulkheads find a home both front and rear to give the sealed differentials a sturdy home in which to do their job. Upgraded diff outdrives, steel driveshafts throughout as well as steel gears in the gearbox mean this truck can handle all of the power of the 4074 size 2050kV motor with ease. Aluminum shock towers reinforce the aforementioned aluminum bulkheads and keep the shocks firmly in place during extreme bashing sessions. To achieve speeds of 75+ MPH Arrma has eschewed the previous generation dBoots tires in favor of new Belted versions to achieve a level of high-speed stability not seen in the first five generations of Arrma 1/8 bashers (the Talion EXB is based on the V6 electronics and suspension package).

While this was a short week I am thankful for the reduced workload as I’ve been caring for 15 new born pups, trying to find homes for each and keeping up with their care… they can be a handful! They’re a blast to get to play with and I can’t wait to see them bring joy to their new families in their forever homes. Until then it’s going to be a stretch of near-sleepless nights and lots of swiffereing to clean up their “surprises”!! I want to thank you all for tuning again this week to get your RC fix, your continued patronage is greatly appreciated. Until next week, be good to yourself, be good to each other, be good to your RC.
