TWIRC: This Week In RC, September 14-20

The excitement is building toward the holiday season and the new releases keep coming! This week we have new products from JConcepts, Team Associated, Redcat Racing and PowerHD. This holiday season is shaping up to be a stacked one for sure!

REDCAT RACING

Redcat dropped a huge (pun very much intended) new release on the industry this week when they announced the new Vertex 1/6 RTR Brushless Scale Crawler. This behemoth is powered by Hobbywing’s 2-in-1 Fusion RTR motor/esc combo that offers extremely fine low-speed control and plenty of wheelspeed thanks to its 1800kv rating and ability to handle 4s LiPO power. Steering duties are handled by a Hexfly 70kg large scale metal gear servo while double CV joint axles allow the wheels to swing unencumbered. Steel axle tube inserts lower the CoG while also strengthening the axle housings and the tapered link bars reduce hand-ups while maintaining strength where it counts. Large volume, aluminum body dampers keep the axles in check and are a bladderless emulsion style shock for smooth operation. Under the forward hinged body shell is an LCG style chassis, on-the-fly selectable underdrive transmission (0% and 33% underdrive to the rear), aiding in turning performance when needed but not over-stressing the drivetrain when speeds increase. Soft seven inch tall all-terrain tires are wrapped around 2.9″ four piece beadlock wheels with replaceable hexes, meaning offset changes are simple and a stripped hex is no longer a death sentence for a wheel. Rounding out the package is an RTX-4C 4-channel 2.4gHz radio system with EPA adjustability on every channel to extend servo life.

JCONCEPTS

New from JConcepts this week is a little bit of cutting edge and a little bit of retro. For the modern 2wd buggy racer there is a new 7″ wide rear wing with integrated center divider while folks still rocking an RC10B3 or T3 get a new set of 5.5mm titanium kingpin ball studs.

First up is the Illuzion 7.0″ Monster Wing with center divider, a wing developed over time that increases rear grip along with lateral stability. This untrimmed wing gives racers the option to tune the shape and size of the wing to their liking and is helpful in lower traction situations as it does create more drag. Additional tire clearance is molded into the wing, allowing the wing to be moved forward and low for added tuning options.

Vintage racers looking to upgrade their RC10B3 or T3 to modern 5.5mm ball cups and 3.5mm turnbuckles now have the last piece of the puzzle needed to convert these rigs: the 5.5mm kingpin ball stud for the caster block. This piece allows drivers to use modern B7 ball cups on their older ride for added strength and easier parts availability. These pieces are anodized black for a stealth appearance and installation is straightforward. Sold in pairs these kingpins won’t break the bank either at only $15.

TEAM ASSOCIATED

What would the weekly news be without another RC10 vintage release from Associated? This time around we get a new variant of the RC10 4×4 in Rally trim with a full fendered, though unlicensed and definitely not a 911, 3-piece body. Changes to the buggy version of the RC10 4×4 include a new bumper assembly, new adjustable upper arms, new gold aluminum tub chassis plate with rally-specific dust cover and new rally wheels and tires.

POWERHD

PowerHD announced the release of their newest micro servo this week, the 1025PH, aimed at 1/24 drift cars and touring cars. Capable of speeds up to .07s/60 degrees on and 1.5kg/cm of torque on six volts this servo is a quick and powerful option for these mini speed machines. Packed with metal gears and supported by ball bearings this micro powerhouse weighs in at only 4.8g, making it a good choice for micro 3d helis and indoor gliders as well.

PROJECT UPDATE

This week I spent quite a bit of time getting my Anycubic Kobra 2 PRO 3d printer back up and running. I printed a few sets of TPU inserts for the Pro-Line IBEX 2.2″ crawler tires that we will be using on our Class 3 rig as well as a new crawler chassis for the Class 1.5 Crawler Canyon style build we have coming up. This printer has been extremely finicky as of late; after printing the TPU inserts I changed the settings in the slicer back to PETG, swapped the filament in the dehumidifier, purged the nozzle and releveled the bed. Unfortunately the printer did not want to play ball even after all of this work. The nozzle immediately clogged and had to be replaced and even with a new nozzle the print quality was sub-par at best. The printer was doing great before printing the TPU and printed those inserts perfectly; now it won’t even extrude or retract filament consistently. I can deal with a problem that occurs every time but these issues that come and go with no change from my input are frustrating. I’ll keep at it and keep everyone updated as I figure out what the root problem is.

Thank you all again for stopping by and spending your time with us. Your continued support is what keeps us going here at 1i-rc and we cannot thank you enough! Until next time be good to yourself, be good to each other, and be good to your RC.
