TWIRC: This Week In RC, September 8-14

As the weather cools it looks like the RC industry is heating up! There have been a slew of new releases this week from companies like Redcat Racing, Upgrade RC, Axial and JConcepts. I predict that we will see weeks like this more and more in the lead up to the Golden Quarter as manufacturers announce their holiday releases. I love this time of year, fall scenery and weather in West Virginia added to the excitement of new products!

JCONCEPTS

New from JConcepts are the Dirt Webs 2 and Double Bars for 1/8 buggies in the clay compounds and also as pre-mounts for out-of-the-bag-and-onto-the-car convenience. The Dirt Webs 2 are an evolution of the original Dirt Webs, a tire that is the “it” tire at most clay tracks around the country. The new tire features thicker bars, repeated section and an open center tread that improves forward bit by allowing the tire to open up slightly and expose more edges to the surface of the track. The original Dirt Web was co-designed by Jason Ruona and Brian Kinwald and this tire shows that lineage.

The new Double Bar was designed with an overlapping, repeating tread design that works best on conditioned track surfaces and slick, heavy grooved track surfaces. The inner field surfaces of this tire are filled with diamond shaped pins that conform to the track surface in ways not seen before. This tire is available in G1 Hard Clay to G3 Soft Clay compounds as well as pre-mounted to either white or yellow wheels.

REDCAT RACING

Redcat has announced the release of a new hopping lowrider to their lineup, this time in the form of a Chevrolet Caprice Classic, specifically the 1987 model. This box Chevy is ultra-popular in both the big wheel and lowrider scene and now Redcat has brought the iconic looks of this car to 1/10 scale. Based on the LRH285 hopping chassis this car can achieve a front end hop thanks to its custom made Reefs V2 hopping servo up front and a pair of 35kg Hexfly lift servos in the rear. Molded accents adorn the exterior and interior of the car and the headlights and taillights are LED ready. Scale 13″ radial reverse lace wheels are adorned with Redcat’s own scale whitewall tires for a traditional lowrider look. Offered in either Orange (available first) or gold (arriving later this month or early October) this car performs as well as it looks.

UPGRADE RC

UpGrade RC, a house brand of Amain hobbies, has release two new tires (in 2 sizes each) as well as new dual stage foams, all for the 1.0″ micro crawler crowd. First up are the foams, which measure 56mm in diameter and have a soft outer foam and firmer inner for increased sidewall support without sacrificing compliance. Each package includes 2 foams.

If you need a new set of tires to wrap around those foams, look no further than the new Micro Rock Claw A/T and Micro Rock Claw A/T XL. Each tire is designed with a densely packed lug pattern for scale looks and deep sipes for added traction. The larger side lugs help with side bite as well as forward drive in muddy situations. Measuring in at 54mm and supported by soft, open cell foam inserts the standard height Micro Rock Claw A/T is a great option for your stock to lightly modified Class 0 1/24 or 1/18 rig that uses 1.0″ wheels. If Class 1 is where you do your wheeling the Micro Rock Claw XL could be your next tire of choice. Measuring in at 57mm tall and supported by soft, open cell foams these tires strike a balance between scale looks and all-out performance.

Also new are the Micro Razor Wire and Micro Razor Wire XL. This tire has an open tread design that is not only self-cleaning but aids in traction on unpredictable surfaces. The Micro Razor Wire measures 57mm tall, making it a great option for Class 1 rigs. The same benefits can be had in the larger XL model, which has a height of 64mm, placing it well into Class2. Sold in pairs each set includes soft, open-cell foam inserts and are molded in the Super Soft compound.

PROJECT UPDATES

This week we posted a project to our Projects library showing off our new LCG Stampede 2wd. This conversion stretches the wheelbase and lowers the CG of this awesome little monster truck, making it much more capable. And before anyone asks, no, it is not just a Rustler with big tires. Except it is. But it isn’t. Let me explain,

In my eyes this is a Stampede 2wd as that is what it was before the modification. It had the narrow, high riding tub chassis, the extended ladder braces underneath, the direct connection servo horn, the whole nine yards. It was a Stampede from stem to stern. Granted, swapping in a Rustler upper and lower chassis, along with the bellcrank steering system would (technically) make this a Rustler, but I will continue to dig my heels in and call it a Stampede. It still has Stampede body mounts, Stampede gearing, and the listing where I purchased the shock towers said they were for a Stampede (even though they’ll work with a Rustler, Bandit, Slash, Modified, SRT or TCP. Therefore, Stampede. This is all in fun though as no matter what you call it, this truck is a blast to drive.

Thank you for joining us again this week for TWIRC. It really does mean the world to us that you spend your valuable time with us to get your RC fix. Until next week, be good to yourself, be good to each other, be good to your RC.
