The dog days of summer are here to stay and while the temps outside are still nearing triple digits the RC industry is just as hot with new products from companies like Reedy, Arrma, JConcepts and ProTek RC. The industry is doing quite well considering the overseas tariffs that were enacted earlier this year, a fact that is in stark contrast to the negative outlook many had for the hobby just a few short months ago. Prices are stabilizing, supply is meeting the demand and companies are back to investing in innovation again; as hobbyists we couldn’t ask for more! On to this week’s edition of TWIRC!
REEDY
This week saw two new products from the fine folks at Reedy. The first is a new battery for last week’s release from Team Associated, the RC28R. This 400mAh, 60c, 2s pack features top mounted embedded 2mm sockets for removable battery and balance plugs, hardcase construction all while weighing only 18g for impressive handing and quick acceleration.

Also new this week from Reedy is a new competition ESC for 1:8 racing, the Blackbox 880R. This 2-4s capable ESC features a 32-bit micro controller, an aluminum case with integrated heatsink, 30mm fan, heavy duty power wires and solder tabs, RPM and ESC temp data logging capabilities and is stuffed full of all of the adjustable parameters racers crave in a race spec ESC.

ARRMA
Arrma’s latest 2wd monster truck is the answer to all the Gorgon owners who wanted a brushless, out-of-the-box option from Arrma but didn’t want to go with the Granite chassis. The Quake is based on the Granite Voltage platform with some well thought out improvements over that model, including the 223 brushless system, a slipper clutch built into the top shaft (the Voltage has a one-piece spur/top shaft assembly that pressed into the transmission), Spektrum’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), dBoots Cut Chevron tires, a clipless body, an often needed wheelie bar, a Spektrum S681 metal gear servo and a 40mm fan to keep that 4000kv motor’s temps in check.

JCONCEPTS
This week’s releases from JConcepts are aimed at the racer; specifically the 1/10 buggy competitor who flies the TLR banner. Both the F2 and S2 body options are now available to fit the Team Losi Racing 22X 2wd buggy and come with window masks, overspray film and a JConcepts decal sheet. The F2’s cab forward design and steeply raked windshield lend themselves to high-grip clay, carpet and astroturf racing and two 6.5″ carpet/turf wings are included in the package. The S2 features a less-steeply raked windshield for more balanced downforce, recessed scoops both in front of the windshield and at the rear of the body to enhance either cooling or downforce, short vertical fin on roof portion for stability and two 6.5″ dirt wings included in the package, making this a great choice for outdoor use. Both bodies are available in regular and lightweight versions.

PROTEK RC
Finally we have a new release from ProTek RC, a house brand for AMain Hobbies, in the form of a radio case for the Flysky Noble NB4+ and NB4 PRO+. Dubbed the mini universal case this aluminum shell case features reinforced corners, precision laser cut foam inside to precisely hold the transmitter, and since the foam is modular this radio case can be set up for any future transmitter that will fit by simply changing the insert. The outer finish is a menacing black with a subtle ProTek logo for a clean, high-end appearance.

PROJECT UPDATES
This week I got a chance to sit and do some planning and tinkering with the Slash Sand Rail project. I previously made sub harnesses for the accessory lights, leaving them rather long so that I could finalize their lengths and path to the battery at a later date. Tonight I was able to clean up a few wire connections and will be shortening a few wires in the next few days when I have time to sit down and solder for a while. I like to pile up a few jobs at a time so that I can take advantage of the iron being hot and I enjoy these marathon soldering sessions; I can’t tell you how thankful I am to be able to see well enough to still solder. When I was younger I worked at a popular electronics retailer and got to do small soldering repairs for customers right there at the store and I really enjoyed learning the fine art and using it to help people. The Sand Car still needs the front suspension sorted out, the front arms trimmed for shock mount clearance, new rear camber links made to eliminate the negative camber that is currently present in the left rear and the wiring needs finalized and cable tied in place. All together there’s about five hours of work left and as soon as I find time to buckle down and get it done you’ll see it here first.
Our Class 2 Fun Rig is still waiting to make its debut on the rocks but I am pleased to report that the Temu sourced 90mm dampers still have all of their oil in their bodies, no puddles beneath the truck to speak of. Currently the ESC is programmed to play the Top Gear U.K. theme song (Jessica by The Allman Brothers) but that tone is quite long and I worry that using the motor to emit that many tones may shorten its life. I will be doing some research on these tone’s effect on the motor and if need be I’ll switch the sound out for something shorter. I’d love to hear your thoughts as to which song you’d chose to have your truck play on startup; drop a comment and let us know!
I’ve also been working on a new project in the background that will be unveiled once it is complete and all of the fine tuning is completed. I will say that I did replace the servos that burned out last week with two new 40kg units and this time I left the servo horns off so that the servos will be safe during programming. Lesson learned!
I want to personally thank each and every one of you for spending your valuable time with us and choosing 1i-rc.com as your source for RC news; it is truly an honor. Until next time, be good to yourself, be good to others, be good to your RC.
