TWIRC: This Week In RC, July 20-27

Another scorching week is in the books and it has been a busy one in the world of RC! New releases from JConcepts, Redcat, Team Associated and Power HD have made for an interesting mix of products to drool over and put on our early Christmas list. On to the news!

JCONCEPTS

First up from JConcepts are a quartet of new products including the Slim Tuck 1979 F-250 crawler body, the the Bulls Eye 2.0″ crawler wheel, the class 1 Bossman tires in green compound and finally the class 1 Rock Block tires in the green compound.

The 1979 F-250 Super Cab is an interesting choice for a crawler body but if you were a fan of the Powerblock Trucks Project Super Dually then you’ll definitely have a soft spot for this truck. While not a dually shell this truck perfectly captures the classic lines of the source truck from that iconic grille to the forward slant of the super cab window this body nails the look while also performing at a high level thanks to the pinched nose and dovetailed bed sections. This body fits 12.3″ wheelbase chassis and includes overspray film, window masks and a detailed decal sheet.

Up next are the new Bulls Eye 2.0″ crawler wheels that feature a 6-slot design and a slightly larger 2.0″ diameter that affords a bit more knuckle clearance. The amount of stretch on a 1.9″ tire is minimal but when running larger knuckles such as the Vanquish F10’s or knuckle weights on a TRX-4 these wheels can help clear with room to spare. The blue anodized face is a nice touch, setting this wheel apart from the crowd and optional center hubs can be purchased to alter the offset of the wheel. The included hexes have a negative offset, bringing the wheel inward over the knuckle, thus necessitating the larger diameter; these can be useful in keeping the track in check for those tight gates. Each pack includes two wheels, two steel inner clamp rings, two 4.5mm hex hubs, heavy duty 3mm BHCS hardware and two longer screws for assembly.

Rounding out this weeks JC releases are the Bossman and Rock Block 4.19″ class 1 tires in the ultra sticky green compound. Each tire is supported by open cell foam inserts and are the stickiest compound tires JConcepts offers.

REDCAT RACING

This week’s release from Redcat follows hot on the heels of last week’s Ascent 18 Brushless International Scout with a new vintage style body shell. Under the body is the same electronics package, the same chassis and axles, unlicensed 60mm soft compound tires (the previous release got Interco Super Swampers) and a new set of black vintage wheels. Noteworthy also is the high-steer steering setup in the front that helps to get the steering link out of the way of trail obstacles. This offering is being made available in either green or red and both are handsome looking shells; you can’t go wrong!

TEAM ASSOCIATED
In a surprising departure from their adventure brand Element, Team Associated has released their own 1/10 crawler which they are calling the RC10 Trail Truck. Building off of a pair of gold anodized c-channel steel rails this truck utilizes the Element Stealth X transmission with its 3 different over/underdrive gearing options, Behind The Axle steering, portal axles, original RC10 gold accents such as the motor plate and shock bodies, an RC10 buggy inspired body, all sitting on officially licensed General Grabber X3 rubber. Thankfully this is a kit meaning owners get to experience the joy of assembling an Associated kit for themselves; they sure do know how to design a manual! My apologies as there is only one press photo available at the time of publication.

POWER HD

The servo master at Power HD have introduced two new large scale ultra torque servos aimed at not only the Arrma 1/5 Kraton/Outcast large scale bashers but are also a great option for the Axial SCX6 crawler. The new WB 120kg can handle up to 4s power (16.8v) and can produce up to (you guessed it} 120kg/cm of yank with a speed of up to .10s/60 degrees. The WB 100 can handle up to 8.4v and will output up to 100kg/cm and speeds up to .08s/60 degrees. Aluminum casings, steel gears, brushless motors and standard 15t outputs make these servos a great, drop-in option for your rig.

PROJECT CAR UPDATE

Unfortunately there will be no updates on any of our ongoing projects this week; rather I’d like to take a few moments to pay my respects to Shunaku Tamiya, the man who introduced much of the world to scale modeling, after his passing this week. My first kit was a Tamiya Ford Lightning TL-O1, built way back in 1998. I still remember sitting at the dining room table, meticulously pouring over every detail, marveling at how each step built toward a real, functioning RC race car. That kit taught me a lot about chassis setup, tire choice and clean driving when I took it to the track and the included Mabuchi 540 silver can was quickly replaced with a “hotter” 27t stock, but rebuildable, Trinity Midnight II. That along with a set of bearings had me feeling like I could burn up the track, even if the car was still slow and my driving was mediocre at best. All of this thanks to a simple to build, easy to maintain RC kit that everyone from young kids to seasoned adults could enjoy; all thanks to Mr. Tamiya and his team. Though I have never met this gentleman I have the utmost respect for what he has done for the hobby of scale modeling and want to take this moment of silence to honor him and remember his family and friends in this, their time of mourning. You will be missed Tamiya-san.
