TWIRC: This Week In RC, July 28-August 3

Another near record setting week of heat and humidity is in the books and along with it came a slew of new products from companies including JConcepts, Traxxas, Team Associated, Losi and RPM. It’s been a busy week for sure so let’s dive in to all the new products!

JCONCEPTS

JConcepts has been extremely busy lately and this week released four new tires and seven new bodies suiting everything from 1/10 race buggies to 1/18 crawlers. First up are the new Carvers front and Paddle Pin rear tires for 1/10 buggies as well as a size to fit the RC10T narrow front and 2.2 stadium truck rear. The Carver is a traditional rib style front tire that has worked well on multiple track surfaces as far back as the 80’s. The JC version is molded in their ultra-sticky green compound for the ultimate traction and are supported by open cell foam inserts. These tires are the pinnacle of vintage style combined with modern performance. A version to fit today’s standard 2,2″ buggy front wheels as well as a size to fit the narrow front truck wheels found on the RC10T are available.

Complementing the Carver front tires are the new Paddle Pin rear tires, also in the bubble gum sticky green compound for 2wd buggy rears or 2.2″ stadium truck wheels. According to JConcepts this tire excels in forward traction thanks to its “center offset ‘Paddle Pins'” each tire features “equally spaced, large format step pins [and] smaller outsie pins for cornering consistency.”

Moving away from the realm of rubber and into the land of Lexan JConcepts has also rolled out a host of new bodies to suit most any taste. Beginning with a 1950 Ford F1 pickup body for the Traxxas TRX4m High Trail that includes the required JConcepts body mounts needed to mount the shell. This little guy includes window masks, detail decals and overspray film, making the painting process a breeze. Extended body posts are required to fit this shell and are included in the package.

Up next is a 1992 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab body that is a direct fit for the Axial SCX24 (6.1″ wheelbase). This body includes headlight and grille combinations to replicate both the pre-facelift 1980’s style as well as the post-facelift 1990’s version. Front and rear bumpers are molded in and the sides are stiff, flat units with molded in fender flares for added durability. Like the F1 this body is an officially licensed Ford product.

For those looking for a “little” more performance JC has a Tucked body for a variety of 1/24 crawlers named the JCI Warneer. This body features a pinched nose and dovetailed rear section for reduced hang-ups and added tire clearance. Scale detail decals are included, as are window masks and overspray film making this an easy bag to trail process.

SUV’s not your thing? Prefer a pickup instead? JConcepts has you covered (pun very much intended) with the 1/24 Warlord Tucked body. This handsome pickup features an exaggerated pinched nose and dovetailed bed section that affords clearance for larger tires and allows trail obstacles to come into contact with the tire before touching the body, reducing hangups. Detail decals, window masks and overspray film are included as usual. This body has a wheelbase of 5.2″ and is 3.11″ wide at the center of the cab.

For those fans of the offbeat RC bodies offered by JConcepts look no further than the new 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Lakewood for 1/24 vehicles utilizing the 5.2″ wheelbase option. This body is classic cool and something that you likely wouldn’t see every day on the trail making this a unique option for the living room floor as well. This body features a billet bar style grille, the iconic quad headlights that scream 1960’s station wagon cool. Rounded bumpers flank the body, giving a cool, slightly custom look. Like all of the other bodies featured today (and by extent, most all of JConcepts’ bodies for that matter) the Corvair Lakewood includes window masks, detail decals and overspray film.

Complementing the 1/24 version, JConcepts has also released a 1/10 version of the JCI Warneer Tucked to fit 12.3″ wheelbase crawlers. All of the same benefits of the pinched nose and dovetailed rear section of the SUV shell are present in this larger version, affording room for Class 2 tires to do their thing without any “Angry Lexan Noises” (shout out to Crawler Canyon for this one).

TEAM ASSOCIATED

This one was completely out of left field! When I saw a new 1/28 from TA I assumed it was another vehicle based on the SC28/MT28/RC28/RC28T platform but I couldn’t have been more wrong! The new RC28R (or RC28 as it is listed in some places) is a 2wd, pan car style race kit that is all about performance. Associated took their decades of pan car racing knowledge and success and shrunk it down to 1/28 to create this tiny on-road missile. A floating rear pod with center shock, a fixed-arm front end with included optional upper arms to adjust caster and camber, three torsion side links are include din the package (soft, medium and hard), a steel chassis plate lowers the COG and keeps chassis flex in check, and both polycarbonate and ABS body mount options are included right out of the box.

The TR-4m has a maximum torque of 3.2kg./cm and the WT35 can crank out 3.5kg/cm of yank, both at the previously mentioned 7.4v. Full specs and photos available at the links below.

RPM

Fans of the Team Associated Rival MT10 and PRO4 SC10 bashers now have a new heavy duty front skid plate from RPM to make these tough-as-nails trucks even more durable. The front skid of a vehicle takes the brunt of the impact with the ground when bottoming out from jumps or when going over very rough terrain so having a tough skid is a must. RPM’s new heavy-duty skid plate features a separate servo/bellcrank cover to protect this vulnerable area as well as the skid plate for the bulkhead that mimics the stock piece but is molded in RPM’s legendary blend of engineering grade nylon. Racers can remove the servo/bellcrank cover to shave weight or reinstall it for those days when other drivers are less than attentive of their driving… Each package includes the skid, the servo/bellcrank cover and all hardware needed for installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Like all RPM products these skids are proudly designed and manufactured in the USA.

LOSI

Rounding out this week’s new releases is Losi’s latest mini-monster the 1/18 Mini LMT Zombie RTR. This little bundle of 2s powered fun now includes the ultra-popular Zombie body shell with its signature forward stretching arms molded in rubber and face UV printed onto the ABS hood captures every detail of this intricate body while the cab and bed are pulled from polycarbonate to keep the weight down and the durability up. Officially licensed BKT tires are found on all four corners just like the real thing and the truck is powered by a Spektrum 25a 2-in-1 ESC/RX and a 25t 380 brushed motor. A USB-C charger is included to juice up the 2s 810mAh LiPO Smart G2 battery. For more information and all of the photos of this stunning new vehicle click the link below.

PROJECT UPDATE

This week was filled with disappointing progress to a few of the ongoing projects here at 1i-rc. I broke the tabs off of the servo in the Class 2 Fun Rig by not turning down the end points on the radio before initially powering on the truck to center the servo and adjust the ESC. The servo swung all the way to the right and hit the steering stop and… snap. A brand new, never used 40kg metal gear servo junked just like that. I’ve ordered another servo to replace this one and will slap it in when it arrives. Moving on to another upcoming project, this time using 2 40kg servos, and I somehow managed to burn up both servos. One got so hot that it melted the solder on the board and the other broke its potentiometer stop and started trying to spin the front wheels 360 degrees. This caused the axle to hit the stops and put all of the stress into the servo which is being fed 8.4 volts @10a of current and, you guessed it, snap… then poof as it let out the magic smoke. I know that these are $12 servos from oversees and that could be a lot of the problem but I have used them in the past with good results. I should have removed the servo horns before powering on any of these rigs but I simply overlooked my own advice on this one and it bit me. This is one of those time I employ you to learn from my mistake!

Thank you for spending your valuable time with us again this week, it means the world to us that you chose to get your RC news from us. Until next time, be good to yourself, be good to others, be good to your RC.
